Design Lead

The Design Lead will be responsible for leading the design team, owning end-to-end design execution, and acting as the primary technical interface with customers. This role involves translating customer requirements and feedback into high-quality design deliverables while ensuring technical accuracy, schedule adherence, and team coordination.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the design team across conceptual, detailed, and release phases
Act as the primary point of contact for customers on all design-related discussions
Gather, review, and clarify customer inputs, specifications, and scope requirements
Translate customer requirements into clear design concepts and technical solutions
Review, incorporate, and close customer feedback throughout the design lifecycle
Plan, assign, and track design tasks to meet project milestones and delivery timelines
Ensure design deliverables meet functional, quality, safety, and manufacturability requirements
Conduct internal design reviews and customer design review meetings
Ensure timely release of design deliverables including:
Concept layouts and design concepts
3D models and 2D drawings
BOMs and technical documentation
Coordinate with manufacturing, controls, and procurement teams to ensure design feasibility
Identify technical risks early and propose mitigation strategies
Maintain design standards, best practices, and documentation discipline
Support change management, design revisions, and engineering change requests (ECR/ECO)
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field
15+ years of experience in mechanical/design engineering, preferably in fixtures, automation, or industrial equipment
Proven experience leading design teams and customer-facing engineering projects
Strong understanding of design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA)
Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, or equivalent)
Ability to interpret customer specifications, standards, and technical requirements
Excellent communication and presentation skills for customer and internal interactions
Strong organizational and decision-making skills
Preferred Skills
Experience with welding fixtures, automation systems, or industrial tooling
Exposure to PLC/controls coordination and system integration
Experience working with global design teams
Knowledge of GD&T and engineering change processes
